Of course the absolute star of the show is ‘Vela’. A Sadler 25 built in 1981 with jaunty red topsides, a curvaceous tumblehome hull and a loyal and forgiving disposition. Originally suggested by Jon as a matching accessory to my newly acquired red foul weather gear, she’s been a source of joy and fun since we bought her in 2016. Small enough to sail singlehanded with ease, she is a reliable, seaworthy yacht.
Winter maintenance
It’s said that owning a boat is just a creative way to tear up bank notes and it’s certainly true that boating isn’t a cheap hobby. Vela hasn’t been as demanding on our wallets as some other boats, but we have spent a fair bit on her this last winter; the normal costs of lift out, anti-fouling and sail valeting have been supplemented by a brand new feathering propeller, and a refurbished interior with new cushions, cutlery holder and girly fairy lights to make the cabin truly cosy.
